Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have a question about: - the Sounds - the BirdVoicePEN - the Guides - the MP3 Player - anything else?
Sounds:
What is the quality of the sound? The BirdVoicePEN uses the latest digital technology to deliver outstanding quality sound, comparable to a high quality CD.
Are all the sounds on BirdVoice by Jean Roche? The majority are Jean Roche’s excellent recordings. We have also included some other recording artists where we wanted to improve to the collection.
Can I update my BirdVoicePEN with future sound collections? Yes you can, we are looking to release a European Edition and are also plan on releasing updates to the current UK list by adding a few more species or particular calls that are requested. Please bear in mind that these updates are very much dependent upon user feedback, so please do pick up the phone or drop us an Email (info@birdvoice.co.uk) we are always keen to hear your ideas.

BirdVoicePEN:
If I buy a BirdVoicePEN does this include the stickers and guides - or are these extras? The Pen and audio are sold as one unit, you would then also need to purchase the Field Guide (Quick ref card) or the organiser (which comes with the Quick ref Field Guide included) or the Stickers.
I can’t seem to get my BirdVoicePEN to switch on, what should I do? If the pen doesn’t switch on, check that the lock catch on the side of the unit is set to release; check that the memory card is inserted correctly and that the batteries are the right way around; if there is still a problem, try replacing the batteries. If this fails then do get in touch with us so that we can help to resolve the issue.
My BirdVoicePEN seems very quiet, is there any way of making it louder? You can make the sound on your BirdVoicePEN louder by adjusting the volume. To adjust the volume, load BirdVoice, then press the down arrow, use the Left and Right keys to increase / decrease volume. To save your volume settings, change the volume via the < Settings > menu by pressing Left/Right key after turning on the PEN.
My BirdVoicePEN keeps switching itself off after a couple of minutes, is there a way to change this? The ‘auto-off’ setting can be changed using the Left/Right Keys to select Settings after switching on the BirdVoicePEN. Also remember to use the Key Lock to avoid battery loss caused by accidental use.

BirdVoice Guides:
If I put the stickers into my existing bird book will the BirdVoicePEN work? Yes, the stickers can be used anywhere, and make what ever you stick them onto active.
Am I correct in assuming that if I purchase the BirdVoice Organiser and PEN, I will not need to buy the Field Guide? Yes, the organiser comes with the Quick Reference Field Guide included.
I have loaded the Garden Birds file for the poster into my BirdVoicePEN, but I can’t seem to get it to work properly? When you switch on the PEN (with a single press of the central button), you will see the TalkingPEN menu; you click one more time and should see BirdVoice on the screen. At this point press the Left/Right buttons until you see the file “Garden_Birds” that you loaded. Now click the central button again, this time to load the poster, instead of the full BirdVoice collection.

MP3 Player:
How does the MP3 Player work? - The MP3 Player in BirdVoice is a standard MP3 Player allowing you to load on your own music or even recordings of bird calls. To do this simply plug the BirdVoicePEN into your computer using the USB cable provided, and drag and drop the MP3 files onto the PEN. ((If you use the MP3 player we suggest that you back-up the BirdVoice sound file: ‘birdvoice.ap3’ onto your computer for safe keeping - this is only to ensure that you don’t delete it by accident in the future. )) The MP3 Player and BirdVoice work in harmony with both MP3s and BirdVoice sounds loaded onto the PEN. - Once the MP3s have been transferred onto the PEN, you can unplug it and select the MP3 player from the Menu after turning on the PEN. - Using the Left and Right keys select the track (MP3) you want to play and press the central button to play. - You can play MP3s through the speaker or earphones.
What capacity is the Mp3 player? The chip we supply is 256MB, which includes the BirdVoice audio (Songs Calls, Voice Guides), there is capacity in addition to this of +100MB for MP3s. You can also use your own SD memory card to upgrade the capacity to 1GB.

Miscellaneous:
Do we have to register to get notifications of your software updates? Updating the PEN will very much be based on user demand, if we receive a lot of requests for a particular species or perhaps donations of recordings, we aim to provide updates via the web site. We will notify customers by Email and they will be posted on the web site: www.birdvoice.co.uk. A registration process and web based forum to discuss the product and species lists is something we are very keen on providing, we will contact all customers when this has been set up (but it may take a little while). Keeping your invoice number will allow an easy registration process when this becomes a reality.
Do you post/ship overseas? We do post worldwide, however please contact us for prices.
Does the BirdVoice Pen work with Windows 98? Yes it does, but please contact us for the drivers you require.
